MOTOR CARRIER

Motor carrier is also known as road or land transportation. It is divided by two type which are for-hire and private carriers.

RAILROADS

Rail transport is a means of conveyance of passengers and goods, by way of wheeled vehicles running on rails. It is also commonly referred to as a railway train transport.

AIR CARRIER

Air carrier is an organization or company that transporting passengers and cargo by aircraft. They are also known as airlines.

WATER CARRIER

Water carrier also known as shipping industry have evolved in today's market into three separate but closely connected segments which are bulk shipping, liner shipping and specialized shipping. Although these segments belong to the same industry, each carries out different tasks and has a very different character.

PIPELINES

Pipeline is direct channel by which privately transmitted especially for the conveyance of water, gas, or petroleum products. It is also one of the modes of transportation and it is not highly used in our country as other modes of transport.

Transport Demand And Supply

Each transport more shares the common goal of fulfilling a derived transport demand, and each transport mode thus fills the purpose of supporting mobility. Transportation is a service that must be utilized immediately since unlike the resources it often carries, the transport service itself cannot be stored. Mobility must occur over transport infrastructures having a fixed capacity, providing a transport supply. In several instances transport demand is answered in the simplest means possible, notably by walking. However, in some cases elaborate and expensive infrastructures and modes are required to provide mobility, such as for international air transportation. Transportation is a market a composed of suppliers of transport services and users of these service. Well-functioning transport markets should allow transport supply to meet transport demand so that transport needs for mobility are satisfied. An economic system including numerous activities located in different areas generates movements that must be supported by the transport system. Without movements infrastructures would be useless and without infrastructures movements could not occur, or would not occur in a cost efficient manner. This interdependence can be considered according to two concepts, which are transport supply and demand :-

Transport Supply

The capacity of transportation infrastructures and modes, generally over a geographically defined transport system and for a specific period of time. Supply is expressed in terms of infrastructures (capacity), service (frequency) and networks (coverage). Capacity is often assessed in static and dynamic terms where static capacity represents the amount of space available for transport (e.g terminal surface) and dynamic capacity are the improvement that can be made through better technology and management. The number of passengers, volume (for liquids or containerized traffic), or mass (for freight) that can be transport per unit of time and space is commonly used to quantity transport supply.

Transport Demand

Transport needs, even if those needs are satisfied, fully utilized or not at all. Similar to transport supply, it is expressed in terms of number of people, volume or tons per unit of time and space.

The supply side of transport market can be divided in two categories :-

  • Third party provider. Transport companies offer transport services to users who require such services, often on open markets. Transport users pay for the services delivered according the terms of the agreed contract. Examples, third party trucking companies, container shipping lines, railway operators and bus companies. Competitiveness is a key advantage of third party as a providers to offer better and lower cost services for their customers. There is also the risk of fluctuating prices due to changing market conditions and that transport capacity may not be available when a customer requires it.
  • Own account transportation. The transport user deploys his own transport means to move freight or to travel. Example, motorists using private cars or large companies owning a fleet of trucks or rail. The transport user has a direct access to known capacity, but at the risk of a lower level of asset utilization. Example empty movements or idle equipment.

Air Transportation Security Program

The air transportation service is one of the main modes of transport that we can use because we can reliable on the speed and security. But, how secure the passenger, cargo or the goods that travel through the air?

In recent years, terrorist attacks around the world have led to robust changes to the world aviation system to better protect the safety and security of air travelers.

As we know, transportation security is really important in logistics field even for the airlines. We know that air transportation is the highest security in term of delivery cargo or passenger. Everything it is the highest level of security comparing to other modes of transportation, air transportation still has their flows.

News, the government of Canada announced a robust plan to ensure that air cargo shipments are protected from the threat of terrorism and to help exporters move cargo securely and efficiently.

By having this air security program, we can:

->Strengthening the regulations, standards and technologies for air cargo screening.

->Reinforcing the government’s commitment to remain a strong partner in global efforts         against terrorism.

->Reinforcing industry awareness and commitment to our cargo security.

->Increasing shippers, agents, freight forwarders and air carrier in a secure supply chain         that reduces the risks of terrorist or other unlawful interventions.

Issues In Transportation Nowadays

Nowadays, cities that locate at the high level of people on that surround area mostly need support by transport system. The larger the city, the greater its complexity of the transport system structures. Additionally, important transport terminals such as ports, airports, and rail terminal are located within urban areas and they contributing to a specific type of problems. The most important transport problems are often related to urban areas and it is because of many reasons:

CONGESTION

The obvious problem that we can see is congestion. Whether it is the vehicle or the people that need the transport, both have the same problem which is congestion. The demands of the transport are increasing day by day, however the infrastructure are not been able to keep up with the growth of the demand. Even though the innovations are rapidly increased, but still it doesn't help the transportation structures that much. During peak hours, crowdedness creates discomfort for users because of surge in demand. Moreover, even the highway can be full of vehicle, this will lead to unnecessary accidents and because of this it will double the number of the vehicle on the road and it will make a terrible traffic congestion.

ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECT

Pollution, including noise, generated by circulation has become a serious impediment to the quality of life and even the health of urban populations. Further, energy consumption by urban transportation has dramatically increased and so the dependency on petroleum. The environmental impact of transport is significant because it is a major user of energy and burns most of the world's petroleum. This creates air pollution, including nitrous oxides and is a significant contributor to global warming through emission of carbon dioxide, for which transport is the largest contributor to global warming through road transportation. The health impact of transport emissions is also of concern. There is a recent survey of the studies on the effect of traffic emissions on pregnancy outcomes and it can highly affected the child in the womb and also it can cause cancer to the people like us.

Innovation in Rail Transportation Industry

Assalamualaikum,

We are the new generation in the industry of logistics. As we know logistics is recognize not so long ago but it has been running since the first mode of transportation is created. Nowadays, logistics is very popular in terms of career and business. One of the modes that we have in our country is rail road transportation. Even though Malaysia is not traditionally been a railway nation but we still have some high technology train. We admit that Malaysia has fallen behind the global growth of railway industry. Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology(MiGHT) are responsible for growing the domestic railway industry in Malaysia in terms of design, manufacturing assembly and maintenance. Working with more than 50 railway industry stakeholders from Industry and Government, MiGHT carried out in 2011 a serious of workshops to understand, define and plot a course forward for this industry with so much potential. The outcome is being translated into a long term industry planning document for the Malaysian railway industry. Today MiGHT is more central than ever, lending key support to national objectives for global competitiveness and sustainable development in high-value, knowledge-based industries. No other agency has the capability of MiGHT to empower industry and government towards a global future in science, technology and innovation.

There are several types of rail service in Malaysia:

Kuala Lumpur International Airport Express / Transit
KLIA Shuttle train.Fastest in Malaysia and also known as Express Rail Link(ERL).

Express Rail Link(ERL)

If you are a fan of old rail transportation, slow moving train service definitely is your choice to travel around Malaysia. Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) is the sole train service in Malaysia. The intercity train routes cover from Bangkok, Butterworth, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Tumpat. However, except Kuala Lumpur, the other states in West Malaysia can only depend on KTM.

Malaysia has decided to expand the rail service by implementing the new project which is the Kuala Lumpur - Singapore High Speed Rail (HSR). The project was announced by our Prime Minister Dato' Sri Haji Mohammad Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak in September 2010 and is proposed to connect Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru with Singapore. On February 19th 2013, Singapore and Malaysia have officially agreed to build a high-speed rail link between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore by 2020 at a meeting between Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Malaysia’s Prime Minister Najib Razak in Singapore. We will see the progress of this project every year and wait until it is completely build.

So, what can we all say about our rail services in Malaysia?Do we need to improve it or is it enough? Is there any lacking in term of service? Can they easily be reached by us?Only you can give the answer.
